Where to Stop Between Boston and Montreal: The Perfect I-91 Overnight
July 5, 2026

10 minutes off I-91. Dinner 365 nights a year. Sunsets included.

Guests enjoying dinner at sunset on the deck at The Wildflower Inn, Lyndonville Vermont, 10 minutes off I-91

Driving between Boston and Montreal and wondering where to break up the trip? Here is the short answer: The Wildflower Inn is 10 minutes off I-91 at Exit 23, almost exactly where you will want to stretch your legs - about 3 hours from Boston and 2.5 hours from Montreal. And unlike a highway hotel, you will wake up on 300 acres in Vermont's Northeast Kingdom with one of the best sunset views in the state.

Why travelers stop here instead of a highway exit

Most Boston-Montreal drivers default to a chain hotel near the interstate. But for the same drive time, you can spend the night on Darling Hill - a historic hilltop property surrounded by the famous Kingdom Trails network - and have a real Vermont dinner instead of a vending machine.

Our restaurant is open 365 days a year. Arrive at 7pm on a Tuesday in November or on Christmas Day - dinner is on. That matters more than you would think in rural Vermont, where many kitchens close early or seasonally. Casual fine dining, local ingredients, Vermont beers, and a dining room that looks west over the valley at sunset.

Dogs are welcome. We have dedicated dog-friendly rooms ($10 per night per pet) and open fields and walking trails right outside the door - a real leg-stretch for your co-pilot, not a strip of grass by a parking lot. Bonus: Dog Mountain in St. Johnsbury, one of the most joyful dog destinations anywhere, is 20 minutes away.

Single-night stays are welcome. Some inns require two-night minimums. We regularly host one-night travelers heading to or from Quebec, Burlington, and the White Mountains. Add breakfast to your reservation and roll onto I-91 fed and caffeinated.

Drive times to The Wildflower Inn

Boston: about 3 hours. Montreal: about 2.5 hours. Hartford: about 3.5 hours. Albany: about 3.5 hours. New York City: about 5.5 hours. Burlington: about 1.25 hours. We are at 2059 Darling Hill Road, Lyndonville, VT - 10 minutes from I-91 Exit 23, on a paved road the whole way.

Turn a stopover into a reason to come back

Most first-time stopover guests say the same thing at checkout: we wish we had planned more time here. The Kingdom Trails mountain bike network runs directly through our property. Burke Mountain's ski lifts are 10 minutes away. Lake Willoughby - Vermont's most dramatic glacial lake - is 20 minutes. In summer, our heated saltwater pool (the only saltwater pool in the Northeast Kingdom) is open June through September.

So stay the night, have a great dinner, and watch the sunset from the deck. Just know the odds are good you will be back for a full weekend.
