The best-kept secret of Vermont foliage season isn't a place. It's a day of the week.
Come to the Northeast Kingdom on a Tuesday in fall and you get the same hillsides that fill every calendar and screensaver — without the traffic, the two-hour brunch waits, or Saturday pricing. If your kids are grown, your schedule is finally yours, or you can simply take a Wednesday off, this is the trip that flexibility was for.
We sit on over 300 acres atop Darling Hill, and fall midweek is our favorite version of this place: wood smoke, gold light down the valley, and a bench with a view you'll have entirely to yourselves.
The weekday advantage (it's real money)
Foliage weekends in Vermont book early and price accordingly. Midweek is a different market — and here the difference is specific. Take our Carriage House Classic King: $235 a night on a late-September Tuesday, $302 a night on the foliage weekend four days earlier. Same room, same view, $67 a night back in your pocket — about $150 over a two-night stay once taxes are in. Midweek fall rooms start at $220 a night, and every one of our 14 room styles is open to choose from.
Book five nights or more and an extended-stay discount applies automatically on top: 15% off 5 to 14 nights, 20% off 15 to 30 nights.
The bigger savings is the one you can't put on a card: the empty version of everything. The overlooks, the gravel roads, the corner table at dinner.
What a midweek foliage day looks like here
Morning. Coffee, then a slow start — breakfast is served at our restaurant every day of the year. Walk it off on the gravel roads that web across Darling Hill: rolling dirt lanes past farms and sugarbush, exactly the roads the foliage photographers chase, walkable or bikeable straight from your room.
Midday. Pick a drive. Dog Mountain in St. Johnsbury — Stephen Huneck's gallery, dog chapel, and hilltop trails — is one of the most quietly moving places in Vermont. Or head toward Greensboro for Jasper Hill Farm cheese, some of the most decorated cheese made in America, with farm stands the whole way. St. Johnsbury itself has the Athenaeum and the Fairbanks Museum for a rainy-day ace.
Golden hour. Heaven's Bench. It's on our hill, it faces Burke Mountain and the valley, and in fall it may be the single best free seat in the Northeast Kingdom. Midweek, nobody's waiting for their turn.
Evening. Dinner at our restaurant — open 365 days a year, with sunset views from the deck while the warm evenings last — or a pint at Trailside, our pub, where Hill Farmstead's Edward is a regular on the taps.
If you ride: this is also the Kingdom's best riding season — hero dirt, cool air, color on every trail — and gravel and Class 1 e-bike options make it approachable at any pace. Rentals at Rifugio, the bike shop on our property. If you don't ride, you won't miss a thing.
Why the Northeast Kingdom over the famous foliage towns
The NEK is the Vermont people picture when they picture Vermont: working farms, dirt roads, white steeples, hills that go gold and crimson in waves. What it doesn't have is the tour-bus circuit. Foliage here isn't an attraction you visit. It's just what the place looks like in October, and midweek you'll share it mostly with the people who live here.
We'll say more about exact peak timing in an upcoming post — but the honest answer is that late September through mid-October, some hillside within 20 minutes of our porch is doing something spectacular. Midweek, you can chase it at your own pace.
Make it two or three nights
One night is a taste. Tuesday to Thursday is the sweet spot: arrive for golden hour, one full valley day, one slow morning before an easy drive home. We're 10 minutes off I-91 at Exit 23 — about 3 hours from Boston, 2.5 from Montreal, 3.5 from Hartford.
Dogs welcome in designated pet-friendly rooms (one pet per room, $75 or $100 flat fee for the stay — not per night), and October is a great month to be a dog on 300 acres.
