Vacation Ideas In Vermont: How to Embrace Fall & Maximize Your Enjoyment

A painted border for The Wildflower

vacation ideas In Vermont during fall

It's a well-known fact that Vermont is a truly beautiful place to spend your time, especially during Fall. Something about the leaves turning orange and dancing in the wind always seems to evoke a sense of peace and nostalgia. It's no wonder then, that it's so easy to enjoy time spent here during our most colorful season.

Still, maybe watching leaves fall while sipping on some cider isn't enough to keep you entertained. That's fine. Our state has plenty to offer beyond leaf peeping. And the beauty of Vermont is, even if you're staying at The Wildflower, everything is within a day's drive. Seriously, if you were to go from the top Northeast tip of Vermont, all the way to the Southwest tip of Vermont, it would be a 231-mile drive and would take you approximately 4 and a half hours. Give or take a bit based on traffic, road work, and all of those other fun things that come with driving.

Honestly, that's not too bad all things considered. So with that in mind, we've compiled a list of some of the amazing offerings Vermont has for you this Fall. That's right, it's time to break out your boots and flannels because we're making a Fall checklist!

Wilson Castle Ghost Tours

Haunted Wilson Castle in Proctor, Vermont
Get Haunted

If your idea of a good time is a ghost tour, then look no further than Wilson Castle.

Located in the heart of the Green Mountains, in Proctor, Vermont sits Vermont's only real castle. Construction on the castle began in 1885 and took 7 1/2 years to complete. The castle was sold multiple times, and has developed quite the history: both normal and otherworldly.

It is believed that both a portal and a vortex exist within the castle, allowing many spirits to pop in for a visit whenever they see fit. Over the years, Wilson Castle has become a hotspot for paranormal activity, and ghost hunters have walked away with evidence of the paranormal.

Throughout its history, there has been at least one confirmed death on the premises, and multiple disappearances along with it. Rumors have circulated that those who have gone missing are buried on the property.

If spooky is what you're looking for, the Wilson Castle has it. Head over to their website to find out about their Paranormal Tours.

The Haunted Mill

The Haunted Mill in Winooski, Vermont
Get Scared

Located in Winooski, the Haunted Mill is what you would see if you were to look up the definition of a haunted house. Not only is it an actual haunted house attraction with scare actors, but it's situated in a genuinely haunted mill.

The mill, which operated in the early 1900s, is exactly what you imagine when you think of 18th-century mills. The employees worked long, hard hours with dangerous machines and subpar safety protocols. Many workers were injured on the job, and several are said to have died (though their deaths were never reported).

Today, the mill is home to modern businesses, but every year during fall, a haunted house is held, dedicated to those who worked in the mill, and whose lives were forever altered.

The haunt does not sell tickets, and instead has a $10 entry fee at the door. All ticket fees go toward the Winooski Food Shelf.

If you feel like getting scared for a cause, check out The Haunted Mill.

Only open October 25 & 26 from 6:30 - 11:00 pm.

This haunt is not recommended for children under 13, or if you have certain health conditions. For warnings and rules, click here.

Spooky Flashlight Night

Trick-or-treat maze

Kingdom Corn Maze Trick or Treat Event in Sutton, Vermont Logo
Trick-or-Treat!

You may remember Kingdom Corn Maze from a little further up the list. This one had to be included twice because of the fun family event they're hosting on October 15th & 16th.

Because of how spread out we Vermonters are, trick-or-treating can be tough for the little ones. That's why events like these are so important. Not only will your kids get to trick or treat in Charlotte's Web Animal Maze, but there will be candy cannons, a hidden pumpkin scavenger hunt, lollipop picking, and a Halloween tattoo station!

With so many fun activities, this one earned its second spot on the list, and a prominent place on your Fall itinerary.
