Fall In Love With Wedding Planning

Fall is finally in full swing, and that means peak wedding season is upon us. With the gorgeous foliage and cooler weather, it should come as no surprise that many couples dream of an autumn wedding. Both in theory and in practice, an autumn wedding is a beautiful wedding. But how do you pull off a flawless fall wedding?

First, put the word flawless out of your mind. Every wedding will always have small imperfections. To truly enjoy your big day, it’s important to let the little things go, and find the joy in the imperfections. Easier said than done, we know. Second, look to those who’ve done it before you. Find out what you like and what you don’t like. Having a general idea of what you’d like to accomplish is a great way to bring your vision into focus and begin prioritizing and tasking out projects.

On that note, we’ve compiled a list of ideas and things to prepare for leading up to your big day! From style tips and table decor to back-up plans, we’ve got you covered.

Wedding Arch and Aisle Covered With Fall Leaves

One of the things we love most about fall is the array of colors. So what better way to incorporate the beauty of Fall into your wedding than using the leaves themselves?

Not to mention the amount of money you'll save by foraging your own leaves.

Whether you cover the aisle in leaves before the ceremony begins, or have your flower person throw them, it will be a sight to behold.

Save Some Paper

With a little time and creativity, your place cards can easily match your Fall vibe. A little bit of twine or ribbon, a lot of leaves, a scrap of paper, and a pen is all it will take.

Simple crafts like these are an excellent way to add a personal touch to your wedding. They're also a fun way to get your bridal party together for a bonding day. There's nothing like a good craft project to really bring a group together.

And if you're too busy to make these yourself because you're still planning the thousand other pieces for your wedding, there are several small shops that will do it for you.

Light A Candle

What is more romantic than candlelight? The short answer is not much. But candles are a pretty obvious addition to a wedding, and maybe you want to be a little different.

Add a touch of whimsy with this cute and clever DIY project. All you'll need is patience, a good knife, a lot of apples, and candles.

Apples are a classic staple when it comes to Fall, just as candles are for a wedding. With that being said, why not combine the two?

Once you have the apple hollowed out and your candles in place, use these as centerpieces, to line the aisle, or anywhere else you see fit. For a less flammable, and slightly less labor-intensive alternative, try remote-control-operated LED candles.

Give The Gift Of Warmth

Part of what makes Fall such a great time for weddings can also create its own fun challenges. The drop in temperature is great for daytime, but can quickly become a problem once night falls.

Combatting this issue can be as simple or as complicated as you want to make it. You could opt for outdoor space heaters, a fire pit, or an indoor reception. Or, you could free two birds with one key. Your takeaway gift for attendees could also be your solution.

Try adding baskets with take-home blankets for your guests. A cute sign like the one pictured adds a nice touch, and ties in your vows nicely.

Get Natural

Keep your wedding natural and on budget by foraging for some of your decor. Rustic and foresty are super in right now, and thrifting is encouraged.

If you have local woods nearby, or even just a backyard that could use some tidying, forage for some twigs, branches, ferns, and maybe even some logs that you can use to spruce up your wedding. The candleholder to the left was made with a felled tree branch, a power drill with a wood-boring attachment, and some tealights. It was a minimal effort for amazing results!

With just a little creativity, your wedding can have your guests in awe, wondering how the heck you did it.

Make It Gourd-Geous

The beautiful thing about pumpkins is that they are so diverse. Whatever aesthetic you're attempting to create for your wedding, a well-placed pumpkin or twenty can help you accomplish it.

Use pumpkins, real or fake, to punch up a floral arrangement, line the aisle, spruce up your dessert table, or even in place of seating cards. With the diverse range of coloring, or the option to paint your pumpkins, the possibilities are truly endless.

For a more whimsical look, try a Cinderella pumpkin. For something a little more nuanced, try a cotton candy or baby boo pumpkin.

Try contacting a local pumpkin farmer to see if they offer deals on buying in bulk.

Get a Little Unconventional

The time of plain old tuxes is long gone. Sure, there's a time and place for a classic, but why not use your wedding day to show off your true colors?

Don't let your wedding party have all the fun! Get yourself something more in line with your color scheme, and let your personality shine.

Deep greens, yellows, and oranges are all the rage, and will make any Fall wedding pop.

Dare To Stand Out

Just like tuxes, the days of strict rules for bridal attire have also been thrown out the window. (And hopefully composted?)

Nowadays, brides are leaning towards whatever makes them happiest. And why shouldn't they? It's their day.

If you're on the fence because you've grown up dreaming about the perfect white dress, but have since started to lean towards something more your style, do a little digging. The options for alternative wedding attire have grown in the last several years, and it can be fun to switch things up.

Plus, avoiding the white dress means ditching the white dress price tag!

Fall in Love At First Bite

For a long time, wedding cakes have been the standard. But as we've already determined, you're not standard. And you get to do what makes you happy.

While a lot of people love a good cake, they're not for everyone. That's okay! There are plenty of dessert options that your guests will be sure to love.

Fall is the perfect time to do something beyond cake. With options like apple pie, maple bacon donuts, pumpkin pie, apple cider donuts, cinnamon rolls, or even just hot chocolate, you'd be hard-pressed to make a bad decision.

Have A Rainy Day Backup Plan

Now we've talked a lot about the fun sides of Fall weddings. But we've saved the most important for last. It's time to plan for the rain.

For centuries, rain on your wedding day has been seen as a sign of good luck. It's said to symbolize the last tears a bride will shed in her life. As unlikely as that may be, the belief that a rainy wedding is good luck remains.

And who doesn't live for a romantic rain scene straight out of The Notebook?

However, as romantic as that may seem in theory, a rainy day can cause a lot of havoc. To avoid your mascara running for all the wrong reasons, make sure to have a backup plan.

Ask your wedding venue if they have any backup plans in case of rain, as well as what charges you may incur if you have to utilize them. Make sure to do the same with your vendors. Some will only require 30 minutes' notice for rainy day changes, while others might require a day or more!

In lieu of an alternate location, consider having a tent put up just in case. If a white tent isn't the ideal wedding ceremony look for you, cover the food area only, and ensure that you have clear umbrellas for your nuptials. But remember, you aren't just thinking of yourselves here. You also have guests and a wedding party to worry about!

Consider buying umbrellas in bulk and storing them beneath the ceremony chairs. Umbrellas can make for some adorable wedding photos! Also, make sure to keep towels on hand in a covered area.

With all that being said, we leave you with this: take in every moment. From planning to the day of, you only do this once. And when the big day finally arrives, live in the successes, and let the small things go. In the end, the day is about celebrating the love you and your partner share, and being surrounded by loved ones while you do it. Things will go wrong, but so long as your partner is by your side, everything will go exactly the way it's supposed to.
