The Best Leaf-Peeping Routes Starting at Wildflower Inn

There’s no season quite like autumn in Vermont. Crisp mornings, golden afternoons, and mountains painted in fiery shades of red, orange, and yellow—it’s a show nature puts on once a year, and the Northeast Kingdom is one of the best places to see it.

At The Wildflower Inn, we’re lucky to be nestled right in the heart of Darling Hill, surrounded by rolling hills, sweeping views, and winding backroads that make for some of the most breathtaking leaf-peeping routes in all of New England. Whether you’re here for a weekend getaway or an extended stay, you won’t need to go far to find yourself in the middle of fall’s magic.

Here are some of the best leaf-peeping routes you can explore—each starting right at The Wildflower Inn:

1. Darling Hill Road

Distance from the Inn: Right outside our driveway
This scenic stretch is often named one of the most beautiful roads in Vermont. From the Inn, you’ll see rolling fields, red barns, and distant mountain ridgelines framed by brilliant foliage. Take a leisurely drive or a bike ride, and don’t forget to pull over and walk to the top of Heaven's Bench—it’s one of the most photographed spots in the state.

2. Lake Willoughby Loop

Approx. 30 minutes from the Inn
Known as the “Lucerne of America,” Lake Willoughby is a glacial lake nestled between dramatic cliffs. In the fall, the mountainsides blaze with color, reflecting off the deep blue water. A loop around the lake takes you through winding roads and small villages, with plenty of pull-offs for photos. If you’re up for a hike, nearby Mount Pisgah offers unforgettable vistas.

3. Kingdom Trails Scenic Ride

Starting at the Inn
If you prefer to leaf-peep on two wheels, the Kingdom Trails network is world-renowned for mountain biking and fall riding. Trails weave through hardwood forests glowing with color, and there are options for all ability levels. You can rent bikes at Rifugio Darling Hill (right on our property) and spend the day exploring before heading back to the Inn for a cozy dinner and drinks.

4. Burke Mountain Auto Toll Road

Approx. 10 minutes from the Inn
Drive up the Burke Mountain Toll Road for sweeping views across the White Mountains of New Hampshire and into Canada. At the summit, the patchwork of colors stretches as far as the eye can see. It’s a short trip that packs a big punch, especially at peak foliage season.

5. The Peacham Loop

Approx. 45 minutes from the Inn
No list of fall routes would be complete without Peacham, one of Vermont’s most photographed villages. This drive takes you through rolling farmland, historic churches, and quintessential country scenes. It’s a longer outing, but worth every mile. Bring your camera—this is classic Vermont.

Early morning and late afternoon light bring out the richest colors.
Don’t rush—half the joy is pulling over, exploring a covered bridge, or enjoying hot cider at a local farmstand.
