WINTER HIKING: KNOW BEFORE YOU GO

Vermont is a beautiful state to explore on foot, and winter hiking can be a particularly rewarding experience. However, it's important to be prepared and take the necessary precautions to stay safe and comfortable while hiking in the colder months. Here are some tips to help you prepare for winter hiking in Vermont:

Wear proper footwear:

Winter hiking requires sturdy, waterproof boots with good traction. Consider investing in a good pair of winter hiking boots or snowshoes to help you navigate through the snow and ice.

check the weather forecast:

Vermont can have unpredictable weather, so it's important to check the forecast before you head out. Make sure to dress appropriately for the conditions and be prepared for rapid condition changes.

KNOW YOUR LIMITS:

Winter hiking can be more physically demanding than other seasons, so it's important to know your limits and take breaks when needed. Don't push yourself too hard, especially if you're a beginner.

PACK THE ESSENTIALS:

In addition to the usual hiking essentials (water, snacks, first aid kit, map, etc.), make sure to pack extra warm clothing and accessories like gloves, a hat, and a face mask. It's also a good idea to bring a headlamp or flashlight in case you get caught in the dark. After all, the sun sets much earlier in Winter.

DRESS IN LAYERS:

Layering is key to staying warm and comfortable in the winter. Start with a base layer made of moisture-wicking material to keep you dry, followed by a mid-layer for insulation, and a top layer that's wind and water-resistant. Make sure to pack extra layers in case the weather changes or you get wet.

DRINK WATER:

It's easy to forget to drink water in cold weather, but it's important to stay hydrated to avoid dehydration. Because you won't feel as thirsty in the cold weather, your risk of dehydration actually increases exponentially. Carry a water bottle or hydration pack with you and take regular breaks to drink water.

LEAVE A TRIP PLAN:

Let someone know where you're going and when you expect to be back. This is especially important if you're hiking alone, but applies to groups as well. Assume that anyone who is with you on your hike will also be unable to get you help. Tell someone that won't be joining you.
