Authentic Winter Experiences In Vermont's Northeast Kingdom

The Northeast Kingdom of Vermont is a beautiful and rugged region known for its stunning natural beauty and rich history. In the winter, the area becomes a winter wonderland, with snowy landscapes and frosty air. If you're looking for a unique and authentic winter experience, here are some ideas for things to do to experience the NEK like a local:

Ski & Snowboard

The Northeast Kingdom is home to several ski mountains that offer a variety of runs for skiers and snowboarders of all levels. Though a little further north, Jay Peak is known for its challenging terrain and beautiful views. A popular choice for locals and only a 10-minute drive from The Wildflower is Burke Mountain in East Burke. Both mountains offer rentals and lessons for those who are new to the sport.


Explore The great Outdoors

The Northeast Kingdom is home to several state parks and forests that offer excellent opportunities for winter activities. Darling State Park has over 1,000 acres of wooded land and several trails that are perfect for snowshoeing, cross-country skiing, and snowmobiling. Willoughby State Forest in the town of Westmore also offers beautiful trails and stunning views of the surrounding landscape. If you want to stay close by, during the winter season, Kingdom Trails grooms 12 kilometers of skate and tracked classic Nordic ski trails, so you can go from your room to the trails in no time!

Visit a local brewery or distillery

Vermont has a thriving craft beer and spirits scene, and the Northeast Kingdom is home to some excellent breweries and distilleries. Dirt Church Brewery in East Haven is a popular choice, with a range of incredible craft options. Hill Farmstead Brewery in Greensboro is another excellent option, offering a variety of beers and tours of the brewery. If beer isn't your thing, St. Johnsbury Distillery is a craft distillery that produces a range of spirits including gin, rum, and vodka. If you don't want to go too far, we have a wonderful variety of craft brews on tap at our restaurant and pub!

After a day of outdoor activities in the chilly winter air, there's nothing better than warming up with a hearty meal. When you stay at The Wildflower, good food is always right around the corner. The Wildflower Restaurant is located on-site, with both a formal dining option and a more casual dining experience at our on-site pub. With a menu that includes everything from pizza to specialty burgers, to gluten-free options, you're sure to find something for everyone in your party!
