WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT SNOWMOBILING IN VERMONT
To ride on the more than 4,500 mile trail system in Vermont, your machine(s) must be legally registered in Vermont or any other state or province. A TMA (Trail Maintenance Assessment/Trail Pass) must be purchased and displayed according to Vermont law. TMA’s can be purchased at the Wildflower Inn upon arrival. The cost of a TMA per machine is $100-110 for out of state residents and $70-85 for Vermont residents.
Effective September 1, 2003 - all individuals operating a snowmobile, in Vermont on the statewide snowmobile trails system, shall have a liability insurance policy or bond in the amounts of at least $25,000 for one person and $50,000 for two or more persons killed or injured and $10,000 for damages to property in any one accident. In lieu thereof, evidence of self-insurance in the amount of $115,000 must be filed with the commissioner. You must carry proof of insurance and show it upon demand.
VAST (Vermont Association of Snow Travelers) also has additional requirements for “junior” riders. Anyone born after July 1, 1983, who will be operating a snowmobile in Vermont on the VAST trail system, must complete a six-hour Vermont Snowmobiling Safety Course recognized by Vermont. All operators under the age of 16 must supervised at all times by an adult at least 18 years of age. For more information about snowmobiling in VT visit the VAST website at VAST
